The Main Pathways for Expedited SSDI Application Processing
Having a Disability That Fits the Compassionate Allowances List
Compassionate Allowances is a Social Security Administration program that fast-tracks applications due to qualifying conditions that are considered especially severe. This list of 300 conditions inherently meets the qualifying disability standard, so it allows the SSA to approve the application without a months-long review process.
This list of conditions is comprised of fairly rare, life-altering diagnoses, like cancers that are inoperable or that have metastasized, or illnesses that require extensive ongoing treatment, particularly in a hospital setting. The SSA’s compassionate allowance list can be found here.
Another option for expedited benefits is a claimant facing terminal illness, or “TERI” patients. While meeting the criteria of a TERI case does not mandate a finding of disability, a medical record from a treating physician noting the diagnosis and prognosis may suffice in this instance.
While standard claims can take 6-8 months to hear back on your initial decisions, an expedited claim can resolve in just a few months. In our experience, however, even claims flagged for the most severe conditions are rarely approved in a matter of weeks.
Quick Disability Determination (QDD)
Quick Disability Determination (QDD) is the next route that allows the Social Security Administration to fast-track Social Security disability claims. There is no fixed list of conditions under this program, but if a condition is severe enough, it still allows the SSA to expedite the processing of your application.
Dire Need (DRND)
From the Social Security Administration’s Program Operations Manual System (POMS) DI 23020.030 Dire Need:
- Dire financial need, which means the claimant does not possess sufficient income or resources to address an immediate threat to their health or safety (for example, lack of food, medicine, or medical care); or
- The non-receipt or interruption of benefit payments that has caused a financial hardship.
Dire Need is not an SSA program but a flag or status applied to your application where there is sufficient evidence that the inability to provide an individual with Social Security disability in a timely manner would result in severe financial hardship.
The ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019
The ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019 is a federal law that eliminates the standard five-month SSDI waiting period for individuals diagnosed with ALS, allowing their disability benefits to begin as soon as their claim is approved.
An individual filing for Social Security disability benefits who has a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known colloquially as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is able to circumvent the 5-month waiting period post-approval.
ALS is on the Compassionate Allowances list, which means that your application is fast-tracked if you are diagnosed with this condition. Then, after you are approved, you do not have to wait 5 months to receive payments, and begin receiving payments immediately.
Expedited Is Much Slower Than It Used To Be
In the past, applications that fit the CAL standard were often approved noticeably faster than they are today. Now, even applicants who qualify for fast-tracked processing can face wait times measured in months, not weeks, as the agency works through its backlog.
Why Is There Such a Long Wait Time for Fast-Tracked Applications?
According to the SSA and its current commissioner, Frank J. Bisignano, as of February 2026 there are still 831,000 outstanding applications awaiting a decision.
Do You Need To Do Anything To Trigger Fast-Tracking Your Application?
Luckily, no extra application is needed to fast-track your Social Security disability benefit application. Applications that fit the eligible Compassionate Allowances conditions or are filed due to a condition severe enough to flag a Quick Disability Determination (QDD) will automatically move to the necessary channels.
